Duke & Star's Doghouse

Welcome to our doghouse! I'm Duke, a 6 year old retired racing greyhound. Star is my sister (I'm certain she was adopted, we can't really be related)! She is a 3 year old lab mix. Grab a knucklebone, pull up a dog bed, and relax awhile! We're glad you're here!

Our mom's name is Natasha but everyone calls her Missie. Dad's name is Mike (and that's what everyone calls him!). They adopted Star when she was 4 months old from the Humane Society's animal shelter. They adopted me when I was 5 from Michigan Greyhound Connection. I guess they figured maybe they could get it right the second time around. They seem to love Star but I can't figure out why. She chews on their feet a lot and barks at the stupidest things. I, on the other hand, rarely bark. Before my parents brought me home I raced for a living. My parents don't know much about that and I'm sure not about to tell them. They think I must have been pretty bad at it because the people at the track retired me when I was only about 2 and half. I'm pretty glad they did 'cause now I have this nice fluffy thing they call a couch and my mom lets me sleep in the bed with her when dad is at work. Being retired is pretty neat. I hope they don't decide I should start racing again. Some athletes decide to start playing their sport again after they retire......just look at Michael Jordan. I like running in our backyard but I don't think I'd want to do it professionally again. At my house I get all kinds of treats and somebody is always with me (my mom stays at home to take care of me, she says she's a housewife or something like that). Plus, I never have to sit all cramped up in a crate like I did at the racetrack.

Like I said before, I'm a greyhound. They call my color fawn but greyhounds come in all kinds of colors like black, white, and brindle (kind of like a tiger stripe pattern). I weigh 65 pounds which is about average for a male greyhound. Contrary to popular belief, I don't need a whole lot of exercise. I take retirement pretty seriously and I prefer to just lounge on the couch but if mom asks if I want to go walkies or bye-bye in the car I'm usually game.

I have a cat sister named Tiger and we get along really well. She makes a lovely pillow. I also have three parrot brothers. Rickie is a Senegal parrot, Merlin is a Noble Macaw and Kermit is a White Fronted Amazon. I avoid them. They're pretty scary. You might think it's funny, a big dog like me being afraid of them, but have you ever looked at those beaks?!? Plus they're noisy, they hurt my ears. So as you can see, we greyhounds can get along with other animals too. You have to be careful because some of my greyhound friends think birds and cats are pretty cool squeaky toys but a lot of us live in perfect harmony with other small animals. If you do decide to adopt one of us (and I highly recommend it, as do my mom & dad) just make sure that if you have other pets you let your adoption group know about them BEFORE you bring a new greyhound home. They'll give you advice on how to introduce all of your animals safely, and they can even test your potential greyhound to see if he's cat safe! Oh, and there is a book by this woman named Cynthia Branigan called "Adopting the Racing Greyhound." There is all kinds of good information in there, I highly recommend it.

My mom is just learning about all this webpage stuff and she should be adding all kinds of stuff in the coming months (oh, I hope she doesn't embarass us).
