The President's Challenge
Physical Fitness Program

By Phyllis Babcock

For the third year, FHE will be sponsoring this physical fitness program for your family.  The President's Challenge emphasizes the importance of cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility as the basis for success and fun, in a wide variety of physical activities.  "GET UP! GET OUT!"  is the theme this year. You are encouraged to set some fitness goals for each of your students and incorporate exercise habits into your daily routine. This is a great time of year to start -- it helps fight the winter blahs, makes the bookwork easier, and prepares your children for spring sports.

Please note the copy of the "qualifying standards" within this newsletter.  These will give you any ideas of the types of events and levels of fitness needed for each of your youngsters.  Please remember the real goal is not to earn a patch - but to get your youngsters active and improve their overall health and vitality. Begin soon so they have the thrill of seeing improvement by the time FITNESS DAY comes around this spring.

Again this year Eileen Ayuso and Phyllis Babcock will coordinate some practice sessions at Old Town Recreation Center during late March.  They are also available by phone to answer questions or give suggestions on exercise programs for your family.

Fitness Day itself will be held on April 17th during the morning.  On this day, various stations are set up for the kids to perform the exercises and obtain their best score. There's lots of cheering and encouragement!!  The scores are tallied and each child earns a certificate and patch provided by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Please don't think this is just for "jocks."  Instead, it is a motivator for everyone to "GET UP! GET OUT!"  and feel better.  There will be more details next month.  Remember, volunteer adults and teens will be needed to help make Fitness Day the great success it has been in the past.   You can call Eileen  or Phyllis  with your questions or to commit to helping.  Thanks!
