This year's FHE Geography Bee ended with a big surprise.
Newcomer and 5th grader Nathan Acosta gave our other students Jefferson
Kist, Tommy Pullen and Katelyn Babcock a run for their money to come
in fourth. 8th grader, Adam Babcock, did a great job earning
third place, which left the Bortins' boys to compete for the final round.
To 8th grader Robert's surprise and relief, little brother, John,
won on this tiebreaker question: What is the term for a representation
of the round earth on a flat map? The winning answer: projection.
John has since completed the written state qualifying test and is now waiting
word on whether he moves on or not. If anyone is interested in participating
in next year's bee and wants some tips on how to prepare, please call Leigh
Bortins. I'll also be offering a class next year to help middle
