American History Series
By Martha Shuping

The American Adventure Series is a collection of 40 novels (48 when the series is completed) covering American history from the Mayflower through (when completed) World War II, told from a Christian perspective, through the eyes of fictional boys and girls who would have lived in the various periods. I have been buying them 2 per month through a book club, and Jennifer can't wait to dig in when they arrive--and can't put them down until they are finished.

The main events, major historical figures and details of the period are historically accurate and bring history to life. Each book covers only a small period of history, with one whole book on the Boston Massacre, for example. Every book contains much more detail about the various events than one would typically find in a history textbook. They help to understand how various events or decisions came about, such as examining in detail the reasons that the English Christians living in Holland decided to move to the New World.

Stories include suspenseful adventure and very engaging characters with true to life decisions and struggles. The main character alternates between boys and girls with supporting characters of both genders so it should appeal to boys or girls. As a part of the lives of the characters the books also include historically appropriate accounts of prayer, Scripture, and a relationship with the Lord. Often the children have to make difficult moral decisions or struggle in a realistic way to understand what God is doing in difficult times.

The total cost for 40 books through my book club is about $200.00. Christian Book Distributors (978-977-5000 or http://www.chrbook.com) offers a set of 40 for $49.95. Individual titles are 2.95, or 2.50 each for 10 or more. This is a bargain! It's a great set that should make most 8-12 year olds enjoy history.
