Where to go to have an Excellent Vacation!

By Betty Parkes

Especially for those of you who camp, we have discovered THE place to be for fun in the sun, swimming in the surf, discovering the beauty God has created on the edge of America!

An island about 50 miles south of Charleston, SC is the destination. Its name is Hunting Island and it is a state park. One road goes in, one road leads out. Sandwiched between St. Helena Island and Fripp Island are acres and acres of God's creation. We saw no rollercoasters, no bumper cars, no water slides! But there is beach enough for everybody. There are roads for bike riding and excellent boardwalks out into the "wilderness" for nice evening walks. (Don't forget your "campground perfume"!)

We held loggerhead turtle eggs (with game warden present), and watched as they moved the nest to a safe place. We saw dolphins from afar, a night heron, a nesting osprey, a deer, sand crabs, and little brown crabs that lived in the campground. We saw pelicans, a washed-up-on-the-beach blowfish and a tiny baby blowfish I held in my cupped hands. We saw egrets, pelicans and whelk shells in abundance! The last day we were there Rick, Emily, and Molly were all terribly surprised by dolphins swimming only a few feet away from them!

Hunting Island has one of few lighthouses where visitors are still allowed to climb. What a sight, after I caught my breath and regained my composure from being up so high! I won't tell you how many steps we climbed. You can count them for yourselves at only fifty cents per person!

The ocean was like swimming in a bathtub, and for those with little ones that is a good thing! It was clean, and the campground was safe, with a security guard on duty and a locked gate at night.

For dessert each evening, we drank Cappuccino from the campstore! We had such a wonderful time, we stayed an extra night. We highly recommend this park, for seasoned as well as greenhorn campers. It's 20 dollars a night and well worth the drive for a safe, educational family fun vacation; whether two nights or seven! Call (or email) me for more info from the Internet! And enjoy!
