Amos Fortune-Free Man
By Elizabeth Yates
Book Report by Justin Condon

Amos Fortune was always known as a hard working and caring person. However, it was when he was given his freedom, at almost sixty years old, he really showed what caring for others was all about. He set many people free, as a free man himself, by working hard and saving his money. He gave others back their dignity and let them feel freedom again before they died.

I think the reason he set others free, was because of his crippled sister. Amos often though of her and remembered her as she was, a twelve year old girl with special needs. He cherished his sister and longed for her to be cared for. That is why I believe he devoted himself to people with special needs and gave them their freedom. In a way he was giving freedom to his sister, by helping others.

He valued not only his own freedom but he felt everyone should be free. He knew when he was free, he could free others and he did just that.

Book Report by Christine Pippins

Amos Fortune, a slave, longed to be free. He thought that once he was free he could free other slaves. When he was finally set free, he set up a trade to earn money so he cold buy the freedom of slaves.

First, he freed Lily, then he freed Lydia and then Violet and her daughter, Celyndia. Amos felt that every time he freed a slave he was freeing his sister, Ath-mun, who was left in Africa, if she was in need of freedom.

Amos valued his freedom because he had known what it was like to feel the sting of a whip and had known what it was like to be denied the rights of a white man.

After reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
by C.S. Lewis these students wrote a short story in response.

"Enitsirhc"
By Christine Pippins

As I looked through the keyhole I couldn't see anything at first because it was so bright. But as my eyes adjusted I could see that I was looking through two bushes that looked like they had poppies growing on them. There was a waterfall to left and the river that flowed from it was a purple-green color with red stones at the bottom. Silver and gold fish were gliding through the water, and bright colored frogs were flying from bush to bush. I looked to the sky and there were three suns. They were yellow, white, and gold which explained the brightness, but surprisingly the air coming from the keyhole was cool. Beyond the river was a hill that appeared to have a garden, so I concluded that this land had people or some kind of intelligent beings.

The Keyhole
By Sarah Fishel

As I walked into the attic of my big house I saw a mysterious door that caught my interest. I took the doorknob in my hand and tried to open it. The door wouldn't budge! I stooped down on my knees and peeped through the keyhole. All of a sudden I was pulled through the tiny keyhole into a majestic land.

It was the most beautiful sight. Green hills and water that was so blue it was clear. A river flowed right beside my two feet. Across the meadow I saw a massive castle with big huge turrets. The castle was off-white with blue roofs. The flags on top of the roofs flew high and mighty. Guards stomped around the top of the castle, their guns held as high as their heads.

As I walked over to a tiny boat on the river; the grass beneath me was a fluffy green and had a bright shine to it. The enormous sun gave off enough warmth to make me feel comfortable.

Finally I got to the boat and stepped in. Amazingly it started rowing all by itself. It didn't take long for the boat to get to the other side of the river, for the little boat went very fast. I hopped out on to the grass and again I felt like I was floating on air. I started running across the meadow. I soon had to stop for the meadow was a big one, and I was getting very tired. I dragged my sore feet to a big rock. I sat down and decided to take a short nap to regain my strength.

All of a sudden everything started twirling around me, like I was in the twilight zone. The next thing I knew I was on the attic floor. I rushed over to the door and tried the knob again. It wouldn't budge! I dropped down on my knees and looked through the same keyhole. All I saw was black.

Sadly, I went to the living room and found my mother sitting on the couch.

I looked at her and said, "Have you ever seen what's in the closet in the attic."

"Yes," she replied. I looked at her wonderingly hoping she would go on.

"I can tell what just happened."

"How?"

She motioned me to come and sit by her on the couch. "I also went through the keyhole when I was a little girl. I had the same look as you when I came down the stairs..."
