INFO

FACTLETS:
Did you know that 65.3% of 4th grade homeschoolers spend only one hour or less of watching TV each day? Nationally, the average child watches three or more hours of TV per day. -- HLSDA

By current estimates, there are between 700,000 and 1,200,000 students enrolled in homeschools in the United States -- Education Policy Analysis Archives

The Condition of Education provides a tabulation of the percent of students nationwide who report using a computer by frequency of use for 4th, 8th, and 11th graders in 1996. At each grade level, the distribution of computer use in 1998 by homeschool students is different from that of the nation in 1996. At each of these three grade levels, much larger percentages of homeschool students never use a computer. At the fourth-grade level, a much larger percent of homeschool students use a computer every day. -- Education Policy Analysis Archives

The amount of money spent in 1997 on homeschool education for textbooks, lesson materials, tutoring and enrichment services, and testing ranged from less than $200 to more than $2000. The median amount of money spent was about $400. -- HSLDA

NCHE CONFERENCE ATENDANCE:
Registered attendance for the 16th Annual NCHE Conference at the Benton Convention Center in W-S, NC on May 25-27, 2000 was 7549. Next Year's Conference Date is: May 24-26, 2001.

REPORT ON THE NCHE GRADUATION:
There were 38 graduates at NCHE's second formal ceremony, held at this year’s conference. Each of the graduates received a cap and gown, an NCHE diploma, and a set of photographs. Dr. Jeff Myers delivered a graduation address entitled "Five Strategies Satan Uses to Pull You Off Course."

PAGE PROGRAM REPORT:
NCHE has been receiving 20-25 calls a month from the Legislature asking for help with their page programs. NCHE does not have a specific period scheduled for homeschooled pages, but is helping with shortages; about 90-95% of requests have been accommodated, including some on very short (three day) advance notice. One advantage to the situation is that homeschoolers can serve multiple times, while public school students are limited to one or two weeks total.
