Notes for Wilhelm Aden Altenburg

Wilhelm Aden Altenburg was born in Hersfeld, Hesse-Cassel, in 1756 (the
city is presently known as Bad Hersfeld, Hesse-Cassel, Germany). He
served as a private in the Prinz Carl regiment of Hessian troops, hired
as mercenary soldiers to fight for the British during the American
Revolutionary War. According to Hessian records, he deserted his
regiment in August 1782, in order to settle in America. By this time he
had already met and married Elizabeth Mosher, a daughter of presumed
loyalists to the British crown.
Wilhelm and Elizabeth first lived in Ballston, in Albany County, NY
(which later became a part of Saratoga County). According to the 1790
Census, there were, besides himself, 2 males under 16 years, and his
wife. They later farmed in Palatine, Montgomery County, NY, which later
encompassed the area which includes the present-day town of Oppenheim in
Herkimer County.
Wilhelm Altenburg was buried in the Snells Bush Church Graveyard in
Mannheim Township, Herkimer Co., NY.
