"In 1880, Libby (Martha) Gould related to the well known Goulds of New York, arrived with her family by wagon train to become the 3rd white girl of twelve families now in Spokane. Her marriage to Alfred R. Stratton, son of Rev. W. Stratton, Five Mile Prairie, was a royal affair. They purchased & moved to the orchard farm on the Prarie. Their family consisted of 2 boys, Roland and Browne, & two girls, Edna & Ethel, the 1st twins on the Prairie & in Spokane. Very few changes have been made on the original Stratton home, visible to all who travel the southwest approach to the Prairie. Roland Stratton & his wife, Daisy, reside in this monument to the past. Edna & her husband, George Gruenhagen reside next door in a much smaller cottage in an atmospher of not too many modern appliances & conveniences. We are simple people, but we are proud, she beams. At age 84, she is bright faced & keen of memory. Both she & her brother remember the 1st school they attended on Five Mile Prairie. A lone cottonwood still stands to mark the original location."
