1 Elisha WHITTLESEY (John, Eliphalet, Eliphalet, John) Descendant of John and Ruth Whittlesey b 19 Oct 1783 in Washington, Litchfield Cty, CT; d 7 Jan 1863, Washington, DC [Ref 2]; m 5 Jan 1806 Polly MYGATT b 8 Jan 1787, Danbury, Fairfield Cty, CT; d 11 Jun 1855 in Canfield, Mahoning Cty, OH. Polly was the dau Comfort Starr MYGATT and Polly ___ and des from John BOSTWICK. The MYGATT family is documented in "Genealogy of the Bostwick family in America", compiled and printed by Henry Anthon Bostwick, NY 1901.
"When he was nine years old, 1792, his parents removed to Salisbury, CT, where his boyhood was spent on a farm; during the school terms he went to Danbury, CT public schools; while there, did chores to pay for his board. He afterward studied law in the office of his brother, Matthew Beale WHITTLESEY, in Danbury, and early qualified himself for the practice of law. He was admitted to the bar of Fairfield County court, also opened an office in New Milford, CT, in 1805. June 3, 1806, Mr. and Mrs. Whittlesey left Danbury, CT for the West, in a Jersey wagon with a good team of horses. The morning after leaving Pittsburg, they were surprised to find darkness spreading over the land, to such an extent that for a time they thought best to put up. It was the total sun eclipse in June, 1806. They arrived in Canfield, Mahoning Cty, OH, June 27, 1806. Clients did not at first show up in abundance, therefore Mr. Whittlesey's first winter in Ohio, that of 1806-7, was spent in teaching school in the vicinity of the present so-called mud schoolhouse. The years of 1807 and 1808 were busy ones. The lot was cleared, a large house built, and Mr. Whittlesey's professional duties increased, he being public prosecutor for the entire Western Reserve. They removed from their cabin of two rooms to their new house, October 27, 1808. Mr. Whittlesey was connected with the militia, and, in 1808, he was promoted to the captaincy, and in 1810 was commissioned as aid-de-camp on the staff of Maj.Gen. Wadsworth of the 4th Division Ohio Militia. On receipt of Hull's surrender-the excitement of produced by the first fire on Ft. Sumter was not a parallel one,-Mr. Whittlesey closed his law books, dismissed his clients, and the second day following, Maj.Gen. Wadsworth, with Maj. Whittlesey for his aid, was on his way to Cleveland, escorted by a company of volunteer cavalry. Under the call of the President, Mr. Whittlesey received the appointment of Brigade Major in the Army of the Northwest under Gen. Harrison. " [there is more I'll add later] [Ref 9]
"Elisha moved from Saybrook CT in 1806 to Canfield, Mahoning Cty, OH. This would remain his home throughout his life. He spent a great deal of his time in Washington, DC as the representative from Ohio to Congress from March 4, 1823 to July 9, 1838, when he resigned. He was the Sixth Auditor of the Treasury from March 14, 1841 until 18 Dec 1843 when he resigned and resumed the practice of law in Canfield, OH. He was one of the founders of the Whig Party, appointed general agent of the Washington Monument Association in 1847; appointed by President Taylor as First Comptroller of the Treasurey and served from 31 May 1849 to 26 Mar 1857, when he was removed by President Buchanan. He was reappointed by President Lincoln 10 April 1861 and served until his death." [Ref 1]

He was ordained about 1830, and installed with the promise of $450 yearly salary. At the time of the marriage of Miss Anna WHITTLESEY to Mr. STRATTON, her father, the Hon. Elisha, gave them a comfortable house and barn with an orchard and several acres of land, for pasturage, a cow, and a garden enclosed. In 1837 Mr. Stratton gave up the church until 1842, when he was called upon to supply the Congregational Church of Deerfield, O. In 1866 removed to Warren, O. During all these years Mrs. Stratton labored with love in the church and home, developing one of the most beautiful chracters in every respect that could fill the life of a devoted wife, mother, and friend. In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Stratton celebrated their golden wedding, surrounded by their warm friends of the different churches where Mr. Stratton had been pastor. In January, 1884, Mr. Stratton contracted pneumonia while riding twenty-five miles in a sleigh, and died, greatly lamented, Jan. 27, 1884. Mrs. Stratton removed to Spokane, Wash., 1889, where she pased the remainder of her life amid her children and grandchildren, retaining all her faculties perfectly, writing a beautiful hand and most interesting letter, several of which the compiler of this work values highly among the interesting papers of the material from which this work is compiled, bearing their silent testimony of the grand gifts of God, with which she was endowed, until she received her summons from her heavenly father to "come unto me and rest."
