I Corinthians

Chapter 5
1~~ It is actually reported that there is fornication among you.
And such a type of fornication
as is not so much as named among the Gentiles -
that one should have his father's wife!

{Note: In the Greek, what is being reported will shock the congregation. A member of the Corinthian Church was committing incest. RBT says that others were boasting that even the unbelievers would not do that! This guy of theirs was 'unique'!}

2~~ And you are puffed up {idiom: 'almost bragging about it'}
and have not rather mourned
that he that has done this deed
might be taken away from among you.

{Note: As an Apostle, Paul could judge and also decree the Sin unto Death to this man and will (though apparently later it is rescinded).}

{Mechanics of discipline for this joker- verses 3-5}
3~~ For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit,
have judged already . . . as though I were present . . .
concerning him that has so done this deed.

4-5~~ In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
when you are gathered together,
and my spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5~~
to deliver such a one unto Satan
for the destruction of the flesh,
that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

{Note: Paul is saying here that the judgement will be applied at the next Church service. And, again Paul is saying 'once saved always saved' . . . this bird still did not lose his salvation.}

6~~ Your boasting is not good.
Don't you know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

{Note: This is an idiom similar to one bad apple in a barrel today.}

7~~ Purge out therefore the old leaven,
that you may be a new lump, as you are unleavened.
For even Christ . . . our Passover . . . is sacrificed for us.

{Note: Paul is saying that the Jewish tradition of Passover was a representation of Christ as our savior.}

8~~ Therefore let us keep the feast not with old leaven,
neither with the leaven of malice {refers to mental attitude sins}
and wicked deeds
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity
  {hold it up to the Word of God}
even the truth/doctrine.

{Clarification of previous instructions}
9~~ I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators.

{Note: RBT says Paul wrote 4 epistles to the Corinthians but two were lost to us.}

10~~ Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world,
or with the covetous,
or extortioners,
or with idolaters
for then must you need to go out into the world.

{Note: Paul is clarifying. By fornicators he did not mean to avoid unbelievers . . . to evangelize them they have to go out into the world. But avoid the BELIEVERS who are engaging in these things!}

11~~ But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a BROTHER be:
  a fornicator, or
  covetous {lust motivated}, or
  an idolater {religious activity}, or
  a railer {gossip, malinger}, or
  a drunkard, or
  an extortioner . . .
with such a one . . .
do not have fellowship {idiom - literally is 'no not to eat'}.

12~~ For what have I to do to judge them also that are without
  {outside the Church - unbelievers. This is saying that it is not
  Paul's job to judge the sins of the unbelievers}?
Do not you judge them that are within?

{Note: Paul is rebuffing them for NOT separating from the beleiver in incest.}

13~~ But them that are without {unbelievers} God judges.
Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

{Note: Paul is telling them to excommunicate the believer involved in incest. In II Corinthians this bird rebounds and Paul tells them to let him back into the Church!}
