MAP, the School

On September 2nd, twenty-four high-school age students were back in the classrooms of this five-room high school, located near downtown Spokane. MAP (Multi-agency Adolescent Program) is a program of Spokane Mental Health. It serves up to 24 students, has three certified teachers, three Spokane Mental Health counselors and its administrator.

MAP offers its students a blend of education and mental health services. Many of these kids have little hope, let alone the dream of ever graduating high school. In the past 10 years it has served over 200 students. The Class of ’00 is MAP’s sixth and largest graduating class, with nine students. Student referrals to MAP high school come from District 81.

MAP provides a supportive environment for learning and success. Students learn the traditional three R’s and are encouraged to build on special interests. Some students gain on-the-job experience, attend the Spokane Skill Center or return to their own high school.

Students can attend the summer activities program for a place to socialize and keep busy for the summer. To help fund summer activities, the students run an Espresso stand throughout the year, hold a spring Cyrus O’Leary pie sale, a Christmas craft sale and several bake sales.

While talking to the administrator, Bob Brandon, we learned their wish list includes newer Macintosh computers, a new printer and memory for the old computers. For more information or questions, call 509-838-4651.

Editors note: One student I talked to from MAP, said “I am graduating this year. I want you to know that I wouldn’t be alive today, if it weren’t for the care and support of the staff here at MAP.”

— A big Thank you for making a difference in the lives of kids!
