Old Max
epb1937@scrtc.com
There was a Kentucky family of the County of Hart-
Last name was Edwards; given name William Asbury.
His wife's name was Nancy Josephine Harrod.
From hard work and toil they were often weary.
Prior to 1880 they moved to Rowletts
From the Hart County line near Wax.
They owned an old work horse for years
And they called him "Old Max".
To transport their furniture and belongings,
They hitched to a road wagon "Old Max";
And passed the Munfordville Court House
Where they stopped and paid their yearly tax.
Across the winding, muddy Green River
And on southward they traveled a way
To just south of the town of Rowletts;
It had taken them all one day.
They were fatigued from traveling
And to bed early they did retire
After feeding "Old Max" six ears of corn
And chunking up the fire.
A good night's sleep and rest was had
And they arose at the break of day
To continue their distasteful moving chore;
But looking outside, "Where's 'Old Max'?" they did say.
They began to quest, hunt and search,
But Old Max was not anywhere to be seen.
You think someone has stolen him?
Now, who would be so evil and mean?
Back to Wax they did travel and go
To get the rest of their things;
And arrival at their old homestead
"Hee-Haw" Old Max sings.
This family story was handed down
As retold by Grand-daughter Ollie May
To her children and then grandchildren
and on to the generation of Glenda Faye.
