Mama's Day In-Time

epb1937@scrtc.com

Mama arose at the break of day
Went to the barn and fed the cow some hay.

She milked the cow named "Daisy".
When she got back to the house, it would still be hazy.

Then breakfast was to be prepared
For those whom she loved and cared.

She made biscuits--not from a can--
But mixed flour, lard, and milk by hand.

The biscuits were put in the oven to bake
'Til golden brown and ready for intake.

Sausage, bacon, eggs, and milk gravy
She made for her large family--the size of a navy.

There were always jams and jellies on the breakfast table
And everyone ate as much as he was able.

The older children she sent off to school
After warning them to follow the "Golden Rule".

She cleared the table, washed the dishes,
Swept the floor, and prepared a dinner that was delicious.

The butter in a stone jar with a dasher she churned
As she recited a scripture she had earlier learned.

She sprinkled the fresh-washed clothes to iron
And listened to the radio for the new goings-on.

Mama mended their clothes with needle and thread;
And to the small children, stories she read.

In the evening, she went again to the stable
To milk Daisy for drink at the supper table.

She put the kids in a sun-heated, rain-filled washing tub
As it was time for the kids to get a nightly scrub.

At dusk after the children had their bath
She helped them with their times-tables in math.

She put them to bed for a good night's rest
After asking God their care to bless.

Mama, then un-pinned her hair and let it fall
And gave God thanks for blessings--great and small.
