The Old Home-Site

Andrew M. and Elizabeth Goodman Polston-Granny and Grandpap-
Lived in the Hart County Community of Need More.
Their post office address was Kessinger, Kentucky,
For years--maybe threescore!
Their house of two rooms,
A chimney, and a lean-to
Was located on the north side
Of Carrico Road for all to view.
The house had large field rocks
Of limestone for an entry step
At the front and back doors;
And they were daily swept.
On each side of the door step
Was a colorful orange or yellow marigold--
To me, my mother
More than once told.
The pine floors were scrubbed white
With lye water each week;
And the hand-braided rag rugs
Placed on the floors were very unique.
The curtains were made of unbleached domestic
And embroidered with needle and thread by hand;
To the sides, they were tied back
So, one could view the rolling farm-land.
After Granny and Grandpap Polston
Went to Heaven, the estate was later sold;
And strangers came to live
On the home-site--so, I've been told.
In time, the house was burned or torn away
Leaving the rock chimney to stand alone.
Years later my parents bought the farm;
And I can remember seeing the chimney rock stone.
The chimney stones continued to rest
Undisturbed for many a year;
And Daddy plowed the land around them
As the old home-place was so dear.
Finally, the chimney stones
Were then moved to become
A part of a front yard rock-fence
That was built for my parents' new home.
After Mama and Daddy
Went to Eternal Rest, the home place
Was again sold to outside the family.
The rock fence! Well, today there is no trace.
So, I've been told--the rock fence,
Which had contained the chimney stone,
Was bull-dozed and buried in the front yard
Over which grass is now mown.
