Kentucky

Kentucky was the first area
Settled west of the Alleghanies
By American Pioneers
Who built themselves log shanties.
Before becoming a state, Kentucky
Was predominately known as "Happy Hunting Grounds"
For Wyandot, Delaware, Shawnee, and Cherokee.
Remains are yet evidenced by their burial mounds.
The first permanent settlement
Was Harrodsburg in 1774,
Followed by Boonesboro in 1775;
And soon there were more.
Kentucky entered the Union
On June 01, 1792.
It became the 15th state
Which was long past due.
The tree is the tulip poplar
That stands so straight and tall.
The flower is the goldenrod
That blooms bright yellow in the fall.
The flame-red cardinal
Is Kentucky's state bird.
He perches and roosts
In the trees in our yard.
The state motto is
"United we stand, divided we fall".
The climate is moderate
With plentiful rainfall.
"My Old Kentucky Home"
Is the song of our state;
And it is a number one hit
According to a Kentuckian's rate.
The economy varies from
Services, manufacturing, and retail trade
To finances, insurance, and real estate;
For this is how a Kentuckian's living is made.
The chief crops are
Tobacco, corn, and soybeans
While the timbers of hardwoods and pines
Beautify the Kentucky forest scenes.
The topography varies
From mountains and coal fields
To fertile bluegrass lands
And rounded sloping hills.
Tourist attractions include
The Kentucky Derby, Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace,
Mammoth Cave National Park, and Shaker's Village--
These are the sites tourists select with haste.
Famous Kentuckians include
Mohammad Ali, Alben W. Barkley and Thomas Hunt Morgan;
Then there was Henry Clay, Daniel Boone, Jesse Stuart,
Zachary Taylor and Abraham Lincoln.
Kentucky is our Bluegrass State--
The land we love.
For Kentucky, we are
Thankful to our God above.
