Papa

Papa was a special man.
He was the father of the Presley clan.
Papa was always gentle and calm.
His favorite reading was a Psalm.
When making a plan, he would always say,
"I'll do this or that if the Lord wills today".
He loved his children, grandchildren, and kin
As well as all of his fellow-men.
He knelt with his family in bedtime-prayer at night;
Then, kissed all the children before turning out the light.
He allowed the children and grandchildren to comb and part
His thick, white, wavy hair in styles of any sort.
The teenage children he allowed to shave him
And his hair to snip and trim.
He drove a 1960 light blue pick-up truck;
And over rough roads, he drove like lightning had struck.
Papa arose before the break of dawn;
And before daybreak, to the barn he was gone.
He milked the cows and returned to the house
To awake his loving spouse.
He sat in the kitchen while breakfast was cooking;
And forward to the day's activities, he was looking.
Papa took his family each week to church;
And in the Amen Corner he would usually perch.
When a visitor came to his home, the table was set;
And he'd ask the visitor, "Have you 'et (ate) yet?"
For his large family, he did provide;
For Papa loved his family with great pride.
Papa lived to be eighty-three;
And now he's in Heaven, forever-free.
