Reminiscence

Being the youngest child of eleven
I played with many a niece and nephew
Who were near my age.
There were Doris, Leon, Armon, Martha Mae, and Sue.

Of course there were others older and younger
Plus George Aaron, my brother.
We were always playing
Games with one another.

We had few toys
And most were home-made.
We didn't lack for entertainment.
Those great memories never fade!

We often visited the family
Of my older sister, Eloise;
And when we saw each other,
We'd always hug and squeeze.

Eloise would cook
Hot meals with pie and cake,
And play games with us.
Great laughter and noise we'd make.

One great remembrance
Of a great fun thing,
While visiting Eloise,
Was going to the spring

To get drinking water
In a gallon pail.
We children did fill the
Water bucket without fail.

Then, we'd jump into the water
And splash getting soppy-wet.
Did we have fun?
You bet!

The water to the house, we'd carry--
Splash and slop!
We might have a quart of water
If the bucket we did not drop.

We'd sometimes be sent back
For the pail to refill.--
All the way down
And back up the hill.

We played with Eloise's babies
And carried them on our hip.
With the older ones we played leap frog,
Hide-and-Seek, tag, and then we'd do a flip.

Those were the days
Of togetherness and fun.
Now, those playful days
Are over and done.

Today, we continue to love and reminisce
And visit mainly by phone;
For in addition to being miles apart, aches
and pains we are now prone.
