Our Hill-Side Farmers

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Lived in a small
One-room log shack
With a lean-to
At the back.

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Walked with a team and turning plow
To break the ground to seed.
They only had sparse tools
And supplies for their need.

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Had to be muscular and sturdy
For their work of hard labor.
They had to depend on their mate at their side
As well as their children and neighbor.

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Had to undergo sufferings, trials, and defeat.
Yet, you couldn't find anyone braver.
They continued to trudge on as
Their spirit and determination didn't waver.

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Were typical farmers of their day,
And they were forced to make changes
For their necessities and needs.
They often with neighbors made exchanges.

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Had to have will-power to hang-on
When the depression hit.
They reinforced themselves
By doing without and true-grit.

Our Hill-Side Farmers
Persevered forward in dreams
To be among the best farmers alive.
There were some who suffered downfall,
And there were those who, in time, did thrive.
