An Old-Timer

epb1937@scrtc.com

Each time an old-timer passes on
A chapter in history is over and done.
Their life's story is completed
But their works continue to follow-on.

We'll no longer hear their voices
Of the experiences they had
Or of all their hardships and trials
In times--good or bad.

They came to Hart County by wagon
Through wind, rain, and sun
With their few possessions
And a muzzle loading gun.

Many days and weeks they traveled
Through the hills, valleys and glens
Suffering sickness and misfortunes
And the fear of Indians back then.

When they finally located a homesite,
They built a log cabin on the land.
They cut trees for their log houses
So the weather they could withstand.

They had many hardships!
Yet, they had fun with family togetherness
At dances, picnics and many to-do's.
They played games such as checkers and chess.

Neighbor men helped neighbor men
With barn raisings, tobacco strippings, and such.
They traded their wares and labors
And shared their possessions much.

The women assisted women when
A new baby would arrive.
They did numerous daily chores
In order to survive.

Our respect and admiration
We give each Old-Timer who's gone
Before us. May their courage and strength
Continue to ever live on.
