Ma and Pa
epb1937@scrtc.com
There's a lot of gruntin' and groanin' by Ma and Pa here at home.
It's not just one of us gruntin' alone.
We grunt when we get out of bed or a chair.
We grunt when the weather is bad or fair.
Guess we're gettin' old 'cause our bones won't work.
We're hourly takin' pills put out by Merck.
We take vitamins and metamucil
To try to be more active and useful.
The kids tell us to stop rusting and go have a bit of fun;
But we can't stand the cold or the heat of the sun.
We use to go workin', visitin', or walkin'.
Now, we're lucky if we can stay awake for just talkin'.
Early each morning we're quite cheerful and bright;
But we're tired and worn by 6:00 o'clock at night.
We keep our doctors' appointments that we have now and then,
If we can remember to look at the calendar to find out when.
We use to love travelin' for National Parks to see;
But now the walkin' will hurt our back, hips, and knee.
Sleepin' in strange beds keeps us awake.
So, travelin' is out of the question, "for pete's sake".
We can't run to catch a bus or train;
For that is too much mental and physical stress and strain.
So, we'll have our fun by stayin' at home
Watchin' the news on tv and writin' a poem.
Each day we'll give each other a hug
And sit contentedly in our Lazy Boys--snug.
