The Chancellor Family History

CREST: an eagle displayed salient

MOTTO: "Que je Surmonte"- That I May Conquer-literal meaning. Let Me Overcome. Implied meaning-May God Let Me Overcome Death.

FAMILY NAME: Chancellor (England, Scotland)-one who held the office of Chancellor; an official who keeps registers of an order of knighthood or an ecclestiastical judge; one who was an official.

The family, of Norman descent, was founded by M. Gaultier, a French law officer of the Crown, who crossed into England at the time of the Norman Conquest with William the Conqueror as his legal advisor. At that time M. Gaultier wrote his name "Gaultier le Chancelier" to indicate his position as chief law officer of the Crown. Subsequently, his descendants dropped the surname of Gaultier and assumed, successively, Le Chancelier, Le Chancelor, Le Chancelour, Chancelor and finally after the 14th Century the name was written Chancellor. The family was first established in England in the 11th Century and in Scotland in the 14th Century.

The first of this family in America was Richard (sometimes known as John) Chancellor, an Army captain in the service of Charles ll. Richard was a zealous Whig and devoted to the Protestant religion. For these reasons, he chose to emigrate to America, doing so in 1689, settling in Somerset County, Maryland. Richard and his wife, Margaret, had three children: Thomas b. 5 July 1691; Elizabeth b. 29 March 1694 ( we have no futher information on Elizabeth) and William b. 5 June 1696.

Thomas married Katherine Fitzgerald Cooper (daughter of Lady Katherine Fitzgerald and Dr. John Cooper) on 3 March 1724. They had six children-John, Katherine, Grace, Rebecca, Thomas and Sarah. Thomas died in 1761, Katherine, in 1767.

My direct Chancellor line begins with William, son of Richard and Margaret. Due to cousins marrying cousins, I am doubly descended from this line.
