ARMS: Gules, a griffin passant or, on a chief of the second three mullets sable.
CREST: A demi-hind ermine volned on the shoulder gules.
SEATS: Wotton House, Surrey County, England (near Dorking) and Evelynton Manor, Maryland.

George Evelyn was born about 1530 and lived in Long Ditton, near Surbiton in Surrey. He made his name by being the first in England to bring the art of making gunpowder to perfection and enjoyed a Government monopoly, granted in 1565, for the manufacture of gunpowder. He was the first member of the family to be seated at Wotton. He married first, Rose, the daughter of Thomas Williams. They had 16 children, all born in Long Ditton. After the death of Rose, George married Joanna Stint. They had an additional 8 children. George died in 1603. His memorial can still be seen in the Evelyn Chapel of St. John's church at Wotton.
Robert Evelyn (grandson of George) came to Virginia in 1634, with his uncle, Capt. Thomas Young; was Surveyor General of Virginia in 1637 and later moved to Maryland, where he was a member of the assembly in 1673/38 and 1642. (source: VA Magazine of History and Biography vol.9, pg. 172-3)
