Records of this ancient and honorable Huguenot family go back to 1400, in Switzerland. The Gignilliat men included Francois, a Judge at Lausanne, his son who
was head of Lausanne in 1610; Jerome ws the Squire of Vevey and of laTour;and Jean Louis, a Judge and a Baliff's Assessor at Vevey.(He was the brother of
my direct ancestor Jean Francois Gignilliat)
While a few hundred colonial emigrants from the British Isles could boast royal descents, only a handful from Continental Europe have been found with such
descents. This article shows that Jean Francois Gignilliat, an early Swiss settler in South Carolina, also had royal descent, albeit a rather remote one. (source-A
South Carolina Royal Descent by Henry B. Hoff) Jean Francois Gignilliat descended from Charlemange, Holy Roman Emperor. I have the lineage directly from"
Amorial et Nobiliare de l'Ancien Duche de Savoie" by Comet E. Amedee de Foras, if you are interested in learning more about this royal line.
