Lewin is English and comes from the ME given name Lefwine, OE-Leofwine and is composed of the elements leof-dear; beloved and wine-friend. This was the name of an English missionary who became the patron saint of Ghent and the given name ws consequently popular in the Low Countries during the Middle Ages.
