The LORD Family History
The Lord family was from Towcester, England. There a a number of LORD entries in the Towcester Registers for the years 1561-1633, including baptisims, marriages and burials.
Richard Lord was born about 1555, but his birthplace and ancestry have not been found. Possibly he descended from a Lord family of Yelvertoft, County Northampton. The Towcester Registers begin in 1561, but the earliest Lord item in them is the burial of Joane, the wife of Richard Lord, on 22 Sept 1610. He made his will 30 May 1610, and was buried at Towcester 16 Oct 1610. Richard married Joane about 1582. They had four children: Elizabeth b. ca. 1583; Thomas b. ca. 1585 (married Dorothy Bird); Ellen b. ca. 1587 (probably married Robert Marriott) and Alice b. ca. 1590 (married Richard Morris 20 May 1611 at Towcester)
Thomas Lord married Dorothy Bird (daughter of Robert and Amy (?) Bird) on 23 Feb 1610/11. They had 8 children: Richard, Anna, Thomas, William, Robert, John, Amy and Dorothy. He came to America from London with his wife and 7 of his children 29 (19?) Apr 1635 aboard the ship 'Elizabeth and Ann'. His eldest son, Richard, had been sent to America three years before. After a year or more at Cambridge or Boston, he joined Hooker's party in 1636. He became an original proprietor and was among the first settlers of Hartford, CT. His home lot in 1639 was on the bank of the Little River, now Wells Street and he owned eight other parcels of land. Thomas was an early member of the First Church and his name is on the Founders Monument.
