Surnames were not used in Gaelic names until the last part of the 16th Century. Murchison derives from MAC (son of) Mhurchaidh (Murdoch). From the year 1400, the sept of Murchison was identified with the Clan Donald McKenzie. Kenneth McKenzie was the first chief of the sept known today as Murchison.
The Highland parishes of Scotland in general kept poor records, possibly because they relied on oral tradition or possibly because few spoke English and Gaelic in general was not used as a written language. Records exist of the sept known today as Murchison in the parish register at Inverness.
