The PELOT Family History
The excellence of the Swiss records, combined with the extreme competence of Oliver Clottu, MD of St. Blaise, Switzerland, have made it possible to trace the Pelot ancestry. Dr. Clottu is a distinguished doctor of medicine who also enjoys an international reputation as an authority on Swiss genealogy and heraldry.
The first known reference to the Pelot surname occurs in La Neuveville, Switzerland (as Pillot) 15 April 1381. The town had been founded by the Bishop of Bassel in 1314.
The earliest Pelot from whom a descent can be traced is Niquilli Pelot. The earliest known Pelot in America was Jonas Pelot ll. He was born in La Neuveville, Switzerland around 1687. He arrived in South Carolina 28 Oct 1734 and appears to have been the only Pelot to have settled in British North America during the colonial period. He married (1) around 1716, Susanne Marie Jaquet, who died "about two years after their arrival" or around 1736. He married (2) Jane ? who was living 4 Oct 1753, when Jonas signed his will.
