SEALY

The SEALY Family History

John Sealy was a descendant of Joseph Sealy, Esquire, an English settler with Lord Cardross in 1683, whose first plantation was on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Martha was the daughter of John Sealy and his wife Hannah.

John was a well-to-do planter and lived some 15 miles to the northwest of Purrysburg on the Euhaw or Indian lands (named after the Euhaw Indians). By 1741, John Sealy died leaving six minor children. That same year, 1741, John Francis Pelot, a tutor in the home married Martha Sealy. Martha and John Pelot had 8 children: John b. 25 May 1742 (married Mary Guinn); Francis b. 8 May 1743; James b. 18 Jan 1744 (married Elizabeth Chisholm); Samuel b. 13 Nov 1746; Joseph b. 6 June 1748; Mary b. 30 Dec 1749 (married John Grimball); David b. 8 June 1752 and Jonas b. 26 Dec 1755. Of these eight children, only 3 lived to adulthood.
