Each person is different in tastes, that is perhaps the one thing we must remember.  Recently on the Gen-Chat mailing list there was a discussion of web pages.  Some exerpts from the mail.  Remember one thing, some of these are just personal preferences of the writers.

***You should try and read it with and older 16 color monitor. One more thing I would like to meation some colors are really hard to read, and hurt the eyes. I'll never understand WHY they put BLUE text on a DARK background ...or RED on a BLUE background .. etc. etc. .......

***And, for those here who plan on their own websites, I loathe the frames where you must move around to read little blocks of information and scroll back and forth because there are too many little frames to fit on the monitor screen. And, if I am hit with a pop-up, I promise myself never to return to that site

***and would also like to mention these little doors and gates you have to click on first to enter a website. Cute but totally useless and time consuming

***Tons of graphics which take 3-5 minutes.......which really have nothing to do with.....and of course, the ever-long-loading java...... Embedded music which (a) takes a long time to load, and (b) plays loudly.....make it difficult to find where to contact the people....... Perpetually moving graphics.....

***If I look down and it says 12 more deals to download, etc. I hit stop and go to another spot unless I am desperate to see something on that site. I really despise the music. ..... I also hate to get into sites with hundreds of names to try and scroll through

Remember there are some people out there that don't have the same capabilities as your computer.  One way for faster loading pages is to clear out the Temporary Internet Files.  Also, some people are strictly business, and don't want all the frills.  Those are few, and there is no pleasing them.

Properly written HTML is of the most importance.  It must be written so ALL browsers can read the page.

Not all browsers are created equal.  And not everyone has the lastest browser.

Sure we would like for people to look all around our site.  I have found that if the pages are kept short, in load time, they will have a tendancy to look all around the site.  Graphics are the biggest problem in load time.  Ok, I make graphics and want you to use the them.  A page can be attractive with a nice front page, and then sub pages using various colors and a few graphics.   Get a Color Chart, they are real handy for using varying shades.  Another thing you can do is use the same background for the pages, this will cut down load time when moving to another page.

There are a lot of do's and dont's in web page design  I'm only listing a few of my own personal ones
Do - Let the page be a reflection of you
Don't - Let other people get you down about your page, there are just some very critical people out there!
Do - Learn Tables - they are terrific for 'lining up'
Do - Learn Cut and Paste - a time saver!!!
Do - HAVE FUN!!!

REMEMBER - SIMPLE IS BEST

Cyndi's List is perhaps the most in depth list of resources

My preferences - I use AOL Press, it's free, then add any additional HTML to the page for more creativity.

Want to learn HTML?  Then join the HTML Writers Guild.  There is a mailing list for beginners with a lot of helpful people, and some neat ideas too.

okay, there is a lot of talk about Geocities and Tripod with the pop up boxes.  At Geocities the way to get rid of the pop up is to place the Geo Guide.  Yes I know it can detract from the page.  So....place it at the bottom of the page.  If you do place at the top, but a divider after it, thus giving the feeling that it belongs there.
