Okay, so it wasn't a date persay (could one be so lucky?) but I did get to spend some time with the man on the Dogma set, thanx to the intervention of the one and only Kevin Smith, whom I shall speak of in due time. The experience is one that I hope not to forget, so I'm writing this all for your benefit and for my own.
I first saw Jason Lee while talking with one of the other crew members, I believe it was a transportation guy. My first thought was "Wow, he's a lot smaller than I thought" thus further proving my theory that I could never been a screen actress.
After that I didn't see much of him until lunch. It was interesting. He got in line right behind me, and me, being the instinctively shy person I am, couldn't think of anything to say. I heard the sound of children yelling, and I turned to see a group of kids that I had talked to when we were still on set. They had followed us to the place where we were having lunch and were trying to get my attention. They were starstruck. I found it funny that they were trying to call me when I was standing right next to Jason Lee, who was in costume and everything. Kids are really funny.
I actually did talk to him a little bit while we were in line, but we never had a real conversation until that evening. We didn't wrap until around 11:00 that evening, and I really needed to get back into town before my last bus left and I had to spend eight bucks on a cab. Well, all the other actors had wrapped except Jason, and as it turned out his was the only van leaving. So Kevin, the driver, asked him if it was okay, and, being the super cool guy he was, Jason said yes. I felt it would be rude, and totally insane, not to talk to him while we were driving, so I did. We talked about movies, acting, Carmen, screenwriting, directing, school. It was totally exhilerating. I mean, here I was talking to my favorite actor as if we were new roommates trying to get to know each other. Okay, so it wasn't quite like that, but you get the picture.
The best thing about knowing Jason Lee is his smile and nod of recognition when he sees you. Remember in Mallrats when T.S. and Brodie were talking to Mr. Svenning and Brodie turns around and shrugs and smiles at T.S.? Well, it was kind of like that. It just makes you feel like the most important person in the world. Anyway, everytime after that whenever Jason saw me he'd flash me one of those smiles and say "hi". His smile is contagious and I had no choice but to smile back.
There's not really much else to tell without coming off as an obsessive fan (I don't think I overdid it with the smile, do you? I was just trying to be graphic). We ate lunch together the next two days he was there, one day with the triplets Barrett, Jared, and Kitao, and the next day with Brian Lynch and Brian Quinn, who came the previous evening. We all chatted a bit, along with Ralph, Kevin Smith's standin. Jason told us about some of his encounters with fans, and he, and the two Brians basically wrote Clerks 2 for Kevin. It'll never happen that way, but it would be pretty funny if it did. To sum up; Jason Lee is a great guy, and I'm enthralled that I have had the honor to meet him. But I guess if you're reading this you already know how spiffy he is :)
Wanna get a better idea of what Jason looks like? Here's a collection of pics I've been able to find.
