American Gothic is an amazing show. Unfortunately, it only lasted a season because not enough people
were watching it (even though Sliders was getting less viewers and CBS kept it on the air) but it still
kicks butt.
A show scarier than any other prime-time show (much more so than the X-Files) American Gothic opened
with a bang. Our first look at the town of Trinity shows us a father trying to kill his daughter and
the local sheriff (the malicious Lucas Buck) finishing the job. Throughout the course of the pilot (and
the two following episodes which continue directly) we learn that the brother of the murdered girl,
his name is Caleb, is the biological son of Lucas Buck. Lucas has some kind of supernatural power that
he uses to keep the town under control and wants Caleb to be his heir. Caleb is protected by the
spirit of his dead sister ("Are you a ghost? Angel?" "I'm your family, Caleb.") who has powers to
equal those of the satanic sheriff.
Creator Shaun Cassidy really tapped into a dark side of himself no Hardy Boys viewer would have suspected
existed to create one of the few truly excellent tv shows of our time.
The character of Lucas Buck was often the focus of this show. Although he was clearly evil, he was something of an anti-hero. We loved to see him come out on top (as long as it didn't hurt Caleb or somebody too bad). The character was also very humorous and the epitome of cool. Gary Cole did a wonderful job of playing this character.
Another great actor is the young Lucas Black (hmmmmm, sounds familiar...) who plays Caleb Temple. This is one of the few tv kids who actually comes across as real. I was often surprised by the talent of this child actor. He was also in the movie Sling Blade.
