We insist on this so that the files can be viewed in any browser or word-processor, on any platform (UNIX, Mac, PCs (DOS/Windows), etc) If you get a file with a .zip, .Z, .gz, or .tgz extension, it is compressed. Please read the separate FAQ 'How to deal with COMPRESSED FILES' to learn how to deal with these files. 2) Viewing .crd and .tab files: When you click on a song name at any of the OLGA mirror sites, the file should either be displayed in your browser, or saved to disk. When you view plain text files, use a monospaced font, typically Courier, at size 10. 'Monospaced' simply means that all or the characters have the same width. Most fonts give different widths to characters, for example to l, n and m. If you are viewing in a monospaced font, the following lines: llllllllllllllllllllllllll nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm will all be the same length. You can check your browser is using Courier to view plain text files as follows: (this example is for Netscape on a Mac, other browsers on other platforms should be similar.) 1. Select 'General Preferences' from the 'Options' menu. 2. Click on the 'Font' tab. 3. Set the 'Use the Fixed Font:' to Courier, size 10. 4. Click 'OK'. In a word processor, you can change the font by choosing 'Select All' and then changing the font to Courier. 3) Possible Problems: If you cannot open the files at all, or you are presented with strange characters when opened, one of three things is probably happening: 1. There is some incompatibility between your machine and/or browser and the host site. Solution: try other sites to see if the problem persists ; or 2. You're an AOL user, using AOL's browser. Solution: Use Netscape. 3. Your browser is treating the files as something other than plain text. For example, an accessory called 'Cardfile' is part of Windows on DOS/WIN machines. Cardfile files have the extension *.crd, and browsers on DOS/WIN machines are told to (try to) open .crd files in Cardfile. The result is that when Windows users download *.crd files from OLGA, the browser automatically treats them as cardfile files, and reports an error, since the files are plain-text and not cardfile files. DOS/WIN users get a prompt reading something like: "You have started to download a file of MIME-type application/x-cardfile." Solution: You need to tell your browser that files ending in .crd and .tab are plain text files, and should be opened in the browser as plain text (or by some word-processor, or saved to disk, whichever you prefer). Here's how to set your browser so that it associates all of the extensions used at OLGA within the browser. This example is for Netscape on a PC. Other browsers and other platforms should be similar. 1. Click on the Options menu. 2. Choose General Preferences, the first option in that menu. 3. On the resulting menu, click on the tab marked Helpers. 4. Click on the Create New Type button below the white window in the Helpers menu. 5. In the resulting box, enter "text" as the Mime Type, "plain" as the Mime SubType, & press OK. 6. In the extensions bar, enter "txt, text, crd, tab, pro, chopro, btab, lyr". 7. Among the Action dots, click "View in Browser". 8. Press OK to exit the Helpers menu. (If anyone can supply instructions for how to do this on MS IE, please send them in.) -----Written by:
