Those Gatchamaniacs out there who are also Doom players (and yes, I think I know all three of you!) might get a kick out of Gatchaman Doom. I took a bunch of pics I scanned in (including my fanart and some panels from the infamous and overpriced Battle of the Planets comic book) as well as borrowing some from The Home of the White Shadow (Thanks Wendy! I owe you one!) and being generously offered some Gatchaman pics out of the blue by Tamara's Anime. (Tamara, thanks for coming through for me! I owe you one!) And, yes, that really is Maggie Quinn's fantastic fanart in several of the later levels, courtesy of the artist, whose work can be found at Devilstar. (Ok, Maggie. . .I owe you too!) |

I put all these images through Paint Shop Pro, Micrografix Picture Publisher 4, and an ancient DOS program called Graphics Workshop. . .ran them through the DMGRAPH and NWT utilities . . . and voila! Gatchaman Doom! (As if it were that simple!)
What does Gatchaman Doom do? Get ready for choices, Gatchafans! On the simplest level, it changes several of the most common Ultimate Doom textures (the doors, skies, etc) into Gatchaman graphics. It's as if the Phobos Anomoly's denizens are Gatchaman fans. It also turns the small trees into that annoying R2-D2 clone 7-Zark-7, so Gatchafans can enjoy using our least favorite character as target practice. Now, if that's all you want out of Gatchaman Doom, you only need to download gatcha.zip

But, wait! It's much, much more! There's also a fun level (replacing E1M1) I created that shows off the graphics substitutions. The files you need to get are
gatcha.zip, gatcha2.zip, and zark.zip,
and if you've never used WADs before, you need to read gatcha.txt before
installing your software.
And it's much more than that, too! That is, unless you're afraid of a committment. |
All the graphics you see on this page are screen captures of the basic Gatchaman Doom graphics contained in gatcha.zip as applied to id Software's original Doom levels. If you'd like to see pictures of actual Gatchaman Doom levels, click here for a moderately intense collection of Screen Captures.
Gatchaman Doom is a completed Total Conversion that includes many graphics changes, multiple sound effects sampled from the Gatchaman soundtrack, anime-themed MIDIs, and many other goodies. Len Pitre, my chief collaborator, got permission to borrow some of the great sprites from the ultracool Hostage Crisis preview of the Twilight Warrior TC and these sprites have been altered to resemble Gallactors. Gallactor Goons replace the shotgun sarges, troopers, chaingunners, and Wolfenstein baddies.Gatchaman Doom is also a retro anime TC, with references to Yamato, Uresei Yatsura and Microman worked in. That's right. Gatchaman Doom is the TC that keeps giving, all year long!!! If you enjoy this TC, Doom and Gatchaman and have some free time, e-mail me! | ![]() |
![]() | Gatchaman Doom has been tested on The Ultimate Doom so the graphics should also work on the original versions of Doom as well. The graphics will work on Doom 2, but the levels will not. (Any interested Doom2ers should contact me and maybe we can convert these levels to Doom2 standards. Will it work with Shareware Doom? The most recent version of Shareware Doom doesn't allow you you use WADS so forget it. Earlier versions will let you, however. Since the first episode of Doom contains a rather limited assortment of textures, and since many of the textures I've chosen to replace are found in episodes 2-4 of The Ultimate Doom, you'll need to have a registered copy of Doom to enjoy the full effect of Gatchaman Doom. The sample level I created (and the rest of the TC), of course, can only be played if you own a registered version of Doom or The Ultimate Doom. You'll also need a copy of the freeware program dmgraph.exe to make the zark substitution work, which you can get by downloading from cdrom.com. |
While creating Gatchaman Doom I discovered that the original levels created by Id Software tended to use the same texture patches over and over. (This isn't a groundbreaking discovery, mind you, but it took me half a TC to realise it!) I'd suggest that if you really want to get the most of my graphics substitution, you should check out some of the independantly created Doom levels available at cdrom.com.
Of course, if you'd like to see one of my straighter Doom levels, then download Fordham Doom. It isn't Gatchaman, but it's fun! And it got a pretty good review from Sir Robin, who reviews a *lot* of Doom and Doom2 WADs. Doom2ers can download Fordham2 Doom
