Cordelia: Marie Antoinette cared about them.
She was going to let them have cake.
Marie
Antoinette was the wife of Louis XVI, king of France, in 1792 during
the French Revolution. When told of the starving peasants, she is
said to have responded "Let them eat cake".
(Actually that's likely a mis-translation. The French word "gâteau"
which now translates to "cake" was probably used to refer to a raw bread
dough.) The insensitivity of the remark was a rallying point for
the masses to overthrow the aristocracy.
Ford: I'd suggest a box of Oreos
dunked in apple juice, but maybe she's over that phase.
The creme filled chocolate cookies
from Nabisco would cheer up many people, though it's more traditional to
dunk them in milk.
Buffy: Sitting in my room, listening to that
Divinyls' song I
Touch Myself.
Xander: In no way do we stick
out like sore thumbs.
From the common phrase "He/She/It sticks out
like a sore thumb." While the idiom is quite common after
Willow and Xander's ensuing conversation, I'm not sure why.
Xander: Sure thing, Bossy
the cow.
Xander plays on Angel ordering around him and Willow. Bossy
was the cow sold by Jack in the story Jack and the Beanstalk (at least
in the Disney version Mickey
and the Beanstalk). The character also appears in other children's
stories. See also School Hard for another
Jack and the Beanstalk reference.
Giles: I've always been interested in Monster
Trucks.
What, and miss the nitro burning funny cars?
Monster Trucks are pickup trucks which
are modified to have huge tires and otherwise large suspensions. They are
raced (over cars, through mud, etc) at Monster
Truck shows. Nitro burning funny cars
are drag racing cars that can also be found at these events. These
cars use a nitromethane based fuel - hence the name.
Buffy: People, listen to me. This is
not the mothership.
A possible reference to the recent Heaven's
Gate cult. The followers believed that aliens were coming to
take them from the planet to another level of existence. The idea is also frequently found in science fiction as in the movie Close Encounter.
