The creators of the canceled ABC series "Homefront" have a
six-episode order for a drama on CBS that could debut as early as
October.
Tentatively called "Second Chances," it will focus on three women
who experience radical changes in their lives and are thrown together
as they get second chances.
CBS bought the show on the strength of a two-hour script written by
Lynn Marie Latham and Bernard Lechowick, the husband-and-wife
team that turned out "Homefront" and previously was part of the
"Knots Landing" creative staff.
"They said, `We know what you do, we love what you do, do it again
for us,' " Latham said.
Directing the opening two-hour episode will be Sharron Miller, who
directed more "Homefront" episodes than anyone else.
Latham said the first six-episode run for the show will be designed as
a murder-mystery mini-series, with the murder solved by the sixth
show in case the series is not extended by the network.
The three main characters - among an ensemble of about six - will be
young women, Latham said.
One is an attorney who is a candidate for a judge's position. Another
is her sister, a single woman who operates a bridal business. And the
third, a client of the attorney, is a Hispanic woman engaged to a
Caucasian, against the wishes of both her parents and his.
Latham said none of the "Homefront" cast members would have
regular roles in the new drama, but only because none of the ages
and character types matches up.
"They're my friends, we hang out together," she said of the
"Homefront" actors. "I would work with them again in a second. And
that's the honest truth. "
