Homefront Returns Tuesday Night

ABC's "Homefront" returns Tuesday night at 9 (Channel 2 locally) with its last seven episodes of the season and, barring ratings miracles, forever.

Set just after World War II in the working class town of River Run, Ohio, this classy soap opera picks up where it left off with the not-quite romance between plant owner Mike Sloan (Ken Jenkins) and bar maid Judy Owen (Kelly Rutherford).

Meanwhile, Ann Metcalf Kahn (Wendy Phillips), now wheelchair-bound because of polio, struggles with both the disease, her family's efforts to help her and her own inability to accept help. She doesn't want to be a burden, she says, over and over.

With the family exasperated to distraction, husband Al (John Slattery) finally confronts her:

"The truth is, you don't want to ask for help because you're too proud," as proud as she was before she was stricken, he angrily points out. Yet, by asking for help, Al tells her, "You're actually giving your family a gift: letting them make a contribution."

Next week's episode lightens a bit as a fearsome monster, television, comes to River Run and disrupts the lives of Ginger Szabo (Tammy Lauren) and her estranged fiance, Jeff Metcalf (Kyle Chandler), both of whom work for a local radio station.

"Homefront" fans undoubtedly will be delighted to have their show back, for the time being at least.
