Rejoice! In about six months, you too can stamp out Siegfried and
Roy.
Sort of.
The sequined Vegas showmen, known for their annoying brand of
animal-based magic, have been tapped as Hollywood Walk of Fame Y2K
enshrinees, it was announced today.
That means you'll be able to tread on the tiger-lovin' German
twosome--as well as Jim Carrey, Jodie Foster, Cheers alum Ted
Danson and 15 others--while strolling along Hollywood Boulevard's
star-studded sidewalk next year.
"The year 2000 will herald in many wonderful things
including our newest Walk of Fame recipients," Walk
committee chair and honorary Hollywood mayor Johnny Grant said in
a statement. "I look forward to inducting these luminaries
onto the world's most famous sidewalk especially in such an
important year in all our lives."
TV icons Carroll O'Connor (All in the Family misanthrope Archie
Bunker) and Don Knotts (Barney Fife of Andy Griffith Show fame)
are Walk-bound, along with fellow tube types Danson, voiceover
star June Foray (Rocky and Natasha on The Bullwinkle Show) and
Univision talk-show host Cristina Saragui (the so-called "Latin
Oprah"). Phil Silvers--best known as TV's beloved Sgt. Bilko--gets
a posthumous plaque.
Celluloid heroes receiving the star treatment are Carrey,
Foster, Peter O'Toole (Lawrence of Arabia), actor-director Rob
Reiner (who rose to fame as Meathead to O'Connor's Archie Bunker
before going on to helm films like Stand by Me and When Harry Met
Sally) and Oscar-winning producer Irwin Winkler (Rocky).
Boston bad boys Aerosmith ("Walk This Way"), monster
rockers ("Rock 'n' Roll All Nite"), ex-Police-man
Sting ("We'll Be Together"), '70s balladeer
Roberta Flack ("Killing Me Softly") and singer-songwriter
Carole Bayer Sager ("Nobody Does It Better") are the
musical initiates.
Kevin Spacey, currently wowing Broadway audiences in The
Iceman Cometh revival, and Siegfried and Roy will get sidewalk
props for live performance. Longtime deejay Johnny Hayes (a
veteran of L.A.'s K-EARTH) will be honored for his radio work.
The Walk of Fame Committee waded through hundreds of
nominees before settling on Siegfried, Roy and Co. two weeks ago.
Sponsors pay $15,000 per star and (with the exception of
posthumous stars, natch) promise that the celebrity will make the
curbside ceremony photo op.
The first batch of 1,558 stars were installed February 9,
1960. Today, there are 2,138 of the marble-and-bronze plaques
saluting film, TV, recording, radio and theater personalities.
