Mariah Carey Sets Record With Two Billboard #1 Debuts

Mariah Carey

"Fantasy" Enters #1 On Both Hot 100 Singles and Hot R&B Singles Charts

Mariah Carey, the biggest-selling female recording artist of the 1990's, has made history with "Fantasy," the first single from her upcoming album Daydream. "Fantasy" will debut this week at #1 on both the Billboard Magazine Hot 100 Singles chart and the Hot R&B Singles chart, giving Mariah Carey the distinction of being the only female artist in history to debut at the #1 spot on either of those charts.

A remarkable 228,941 copies of "Fantasy" were sold during its first week in stores, and the song had an audience reach of 60 million people according to Broadcast Data Systems (BDS).

In fact, Mariah Carey is only the second artist in history to enter the Hot 100 Singles chart at #1, as well as entering both simultaneously; the first artist was Michael Jackson, whose single "You Are Not Alone" entered at #1 the week of September 2 with sales of 120,285 singles, less than half the figure achieved by Mariah with "Fantasy."

"Fantasy"'s debut beats the female record set by Janet Jackson's "Runaway," which debuted at #6 the week of September 9. Mariah's also trumped the #5 debut (June 17) of Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" as well as the #5 (June 24) debut of the Notorious B.I.G.'s "One More Chance." "Fantasy"'s first week sales figure of 228,941 singles sold also bests the previous record holders (Michael Jackson: 120,285 singles, Janet Jackson 40,602 singles, Notorious B.I.G.: 80,897 singles).

Her stunning debuts at #1 are the latest in an unbroken string of triumphs for Mariah Carey. Her 1993 album Music Box has sold more than 24 million copies worldwide while Merry Christmas, her holiday record, sold more than eight million units shortly after its release in November 1994.

Since her 1990 debut, Mariah Carey has sold more than 60 million records worldwide, a third of those in the last 24 months.

She has won two Grammy Awards (Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal, Female), three Soul Train Awards (Best New Artist, Best Album, Female and Best Single, (Female) and an American Music Award.

"Fantasy" is the first taste of Daydream, due in-stores October 3.
