She's got lots of reasons to be smiling that famous, sweet smile of hers; she was the first female singer to have a song debut at no.1 on the singles chart - plus she's one really great singer. (Five octaves to be exact!) Not only that, she writes or cowrites and produces most of her songs. Mariah, whose name comes from a song in the musical Paint Your Wagon, was nicknamed "Mirage" in school because she skipped class a lot. Her high school yearbook lists her likes as sleeping late, Corvettes and Italian men. She went to beauty school and actually worked in a beauty salon for a day, but quit when the owner gave her the name "Echo." Mariah is self-conscious of that mole on the left side of her face - that's why she likes to be photographed on the right.
