Mariah Carey Spotlight

Mariah Carey

When you've been on top as long as Mariah Carey has, you don't mess with the things that put you there. But you can't just stay in one place, either - you've got to grow. And with her latest, Butterfly, Mariah's done just that by taking her signature sound to an all-time high - breaking down musical boundaries and delivering the best album of her career. Mariah doesn't really need an introduction, but it's hard to resist. After all, she's the biggest-selling solo female artist of the rock era - and the first to have 3 studio albums go octuple-platinum (yes, that means eight!). In fact, she's sold well over 80 million records and had over a dozen chart-topping singles, three of which debuted at #1 - only three other songs in history have done that. And her list of Grammy Awards, Merican Music Awards, Soul Train Awards and more could fill pages. But sales and honours are merely the results - the bottom line is talent. And Mariah's got talent by the truckload.

Rising to new levels of artistry and musical vision, Butterfly extends mariah's ventures into funky R&B territory by enlisting an all-star cast of hip-hop greats. The infectuous mega-single Honey is pure party pleasure combining Mariah's silky vocals with hip-hop's hottest MC's Mase and The Lox. Add in chart-dominating phenomenon Sean "Puffy" Combs' stellar production and you've got one of the hottest R&B tracks in history - no wonder it debuted at the top of the charts. Puffy also brings his skills to the infecuously sweet duet Breakdown, pairing Mariah with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone for yet another smash hit. The #1 title track is a hearfelt return to the tradidional balladry that layers mariah's powerful multi-octave voice atop an invigorating groove and a touching, gospel-tinged chorus. She shows off her sultry side too, doing vocal slips & slides over flamenco-inspired guitar strums on My All, and swirling an erotic reverie around laid-back beats on the soulful Babydoll, co-written with Missy Elliott.

Vibrant, mature and revealing, Butterfly shows Mariah at her best - spreading her wings, soaring to new heights, and flying straight into our hearts.
