Discurso de aceptación del Óscar de 1996 (Sentido y Sensibilidad, mejor guión original)
"Realmente no sé cómo agradecer a la Academia por esto y si lo intento estaremos aquí hasta Navidades, así que vamos allá. Hace unos días, estuve de visita en la tumba de Jane Austin y fui a la catedral a presentar mis respetos y contarle sobre los ingresos en taquilla...Y no sé como hubiese reaccionado en una tarde como ésta, pero espero que ella sepa lo grande que es en Uruguay.
Muchísimas gracias a Columbia Pictures, en especial a Lisa Henson, Gareth Whigen y Mark Kantonpor confiar en una guionista novel. También a Jay Shamus por su extraordinaria inteligencia. A Sidney Pollack por hacer todas esas preguntas atinadas como, "¿porqué no podían esas mujeres salir y buscarse un trabajo?" Desde luego, porqué no. Al reparto y al equipo por ser impecables. A mi amiga y maestra Lindsay Doran por ser la única y frustrante razón por la que no puedo adjudicarme el mérito para mí sola.
Y finalmente me gustaría con vuestro permiso dedicar este Óscar al director Ang Lee. Ang,donde quiera que te encuentres, va por ti."

"I don't
really know how to thank the Academy for this, and if I try we'll be here `til
Christmas, so I'd better get on. Before I came I went to visit Jane Austen's
grave, and went to the cathedral to pay my respects, and tell her about the
grosses... and I don't know how she would react to an evening like this, but I
do hope she knows how big she is in Uraguay. Profound thanks to Columbia
Pictures in the lovely forms of Lisa Henson, Gareth Whigen and Mark Kanton for
hiring a first time writer. To Jay Shamus for his rare intelligence. To Sidney
Pollack for asking all the right questions like, "Why couldn't these women
go out and get a job?" Why indeed. To the cast and crew for being
impeccable, to my friend and my teacher Lindsay Duran for being the single most
frustrating reason why I can't claim all the credit for myself. And finally I
would like with your permission to dedicate this Oscar to the director Ang Lee.
