Jason talks to Sonny after his breakdown

Thanks to Kathy for typing this up for us!

This scene takes place during Sonny’s breakdown after Juan was beaten up. It is very intense. Carly walked in looking for Jason and ended up staying with Sonny until Jason arrived. When Jason walks in Sonny tells him to get Carly out of there. After escorting Carly to the elevator and thanking her for helping Sonny, Jason returns to Sonny’s penthouse.

SONNY: I thought you left with her. Maybe you should.

(Jason bends down to pick up something from the floor which is littered with glass and broken items from the penthouse)

SONNY: Leave it. I like it that way. It matches. You know what I'm saying? It’s wrecked -- like you, like Juan. Sorel beat him within an inch of his life. They took out his spleen. And do you know what he said to me, lying there on the bed, you know, with the machines, his face all bruised up, looking like Lily, like the son I (yells) never had? He called me Dad. That’s what he thinks I am. That I abandoned him, which I probably should have done. Why don’t you go tell Juan how great it is to be my son. You could have been anything you wanted! And I made you me. I gave you this.

(Sonny walks over to the couch and sits on the arm while Jason stands watching him.)

SONNY: And don’t even think about cleaning it up because we are animals. We should live that way.

(Jason stands quietly for a few seconds, considering the best way to approach Sonny.)

JASON: Will Juan recover?

SONNY: If he stays clear of me. I don’t know how to fix it. (Sonny looks sad and hopeless.) I told Juan I’m not his father, that, you know, hey -- he wouldn’t believe me. He -- you know, he said that I’m ashamed of him. I’m not ashamed of him. I’d die for him. He’s Lily’s son. I don’t know how to fix it.

(Jason walks towards Sonny, stepping over the mess on the floor. He talks quietly but looks at Sonny intently.)

JASON: Maybe you can’t. Maybe it’s up to Juan.

SONNY (angrily): No! Never say it’s not my fault, Jason.

JASON: (moves a little closer and stands directly in front of Sonny) You’re to blame for Juan thinking you’re his father? Or for him being dumb enough to even work for Sorel?

SONNY: I should have sent him home.

JASON (speaks quietly but intensely): You tried. You tried. He's not a baby. He’s not like Michael. You couldn’t just kiss him good-bye and explain that it was for the best and think he’d stay where you put him. Juan did what he wanted to do, Sonny. That’s what people do. You can’t stop them, and you can’t fix it. Yeah, I could go to Juan. And I could tell him what it means to be your son (Sonny is looking at Jason at though he can fix everything bad in his life) -- What you taught me about honor and dignity, what it meant when the whole world saw me as something pathetic and broken to have you treat me like a man. You say you wrecked me. I don’t feel wrecked. I feel like someone who had a choice. I told you I could handle the consequences, and you believed in me. You changed me. I will never be sorry.

SONNY (calmer now but still very emotional): That’s what I am. That’s all I am. I’m sorry, you know, for you, for Juan, for Stone, for Lily, for Brenda. Just doesn’t end, man. When does it end?

(Jason shows a little anger. Trying to impress upon Sonny that everything is not his fault.)

JASON: Do you believe in God, or are you just wasting your time?

(Sonny, confused, but still hanging on Jason’s every word.)

SONNY: What’s that mean?

JASON: We go to church. We listen to the priest. Do you listen? Are you there? Are you paying attention? Do you think that there is a heaven? Is that where Lily is? Do you think for one second this is what she’d want? (Jason gestures at the trashed penthouse, leans toward Sonny and speaks quietly again.) She forgave you. You don’t need to fix anything.

(There is silence for a few beats while Sonny absorbs what Jason has said. Slowly, Sonny extends his had towards Jason. Jason reaches out and holds Sonny’s hand as though they are sealing a bond. Sonny looks almost relieved, like a child who has had a terrible burden lifted.)

SONNY: I'm tired.

JASON: Look, I’ll make you something to eat, and I’ll clean up.

(Jason walks away. The scene flashes to Sonny who is still sitting on the arm of the couch. His face crumples for a second and he wipes away tears.)
