I Can

I can't understand
How when I finally let you go, you come back.
I can't understand
How when I told myself I'd stop caring for you, you cared for me.

I can't defend
How you treated my friends
I can't even defend
How you treated me.

I can't mend
The hearts that were broken - the ones you thought couldn't break.
I can't mend
All the mistakes, the ones you've come to regret.
I can't reprimand
What you've done...

You look at me with eyes that have seen depression
Seen hurt, seen despair
And they plead to me,
"Then what can you do?"
I look at you with eyes that still care
Still love, still hope.
Eyes that still wait for you...

I can forgive
Smile at you the way I did long ago.
I can love
Hold you when you need to be held.
Love you when you need to be loved.

I can hold out my hand
Forget the past and look ahead.
I can hold out my hand
And show you that I want you to grasp it, hold onto it.
To know I won't let go...
As long as you don't want me to.
