Unlearning the Learned

They tell you knowledge knows no limits
So you begin to learn
However, at the same time
A special innocence and purity departs
You unlearn speaking with your heart
It becomes cold
Becomes hardened
Becomes numb
You're no longer who you once were.

You come to realize
That becoming wise in the ways of the world
Is not all its cracked up to be.
A show
For someone who could care less
A farce
But you're not laughing.
How you've changed
How you now cry
Is there a way back?
Can you unlearn this nonsense?
Or are you left with it?
Left to face your mistake
Left to look into the eyes
Of your own soul?

And you know
There's no way to turn back
That person you once knew
Can never be found.
That person you wish to know
That person with fire in her heart
With love in her soul
With compassion for those who need her
With a thirst to be whole...

The search goes on.
