Like all of my other acting catagories, I am having trouble with nominees for my Best Actor.  It's not like I haven't seen enough movies (this year alone I saw at least 50), and it's not like I haven't seen some good acting jobs... I just don't feel like I have seen many performances that truely deserve the prestigous honor that is a "Mikey" Award.  However, I am willing to admit I am wrong if someone points out the error of my ways.  So please, e-mail me and tell me who you think I missed.

The 2000 Nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role are...

Tom Hanks is definitely one of my favorite actors (not my most favorite, that would be Dustin Hoffman)... I like any actor who can pull of very serious roles (like Hanks in Philadelphia, Apollo 13 or Saving Private Ryan) but who also isn't affraid to have a little fun doing a comedy role (like in Big, Forrest gump, Toy Story and Toy Story 2) or who isn't affraid to take a chance, even though the movie might suck (Joe Versus the Volcano).  Not only that, but Mr. Hanks has made "Mikey" by becoming the first actor to be nominated for two straight years (last year for Saving Private Ryan and this year).  Paul Edgecome may not have been one of his best roles or performances, but this portrayal of a prison guard on death row definitely deserves the nomination.

I am also a Kevin Spacey fan.  Ever since I saw The Usual Suspects (which he won an Oscar for, and would have won a "Mikey" had they existed at the time) I have been impressed with his acting ability.  In American Beauty he plays the inept family man Lester Burnham who reinvents his personality and his life.  If there was any doubt that Kevin Spacey could pull of a leading role (which I doubt there was) he erased it with his wonderful performance.

Denzel Washington - (Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, The Hurricane)

One thing you have to give Denzel Washington credit for, he has range as an actor.  He can do serious, emotional roles (as in Philadelphia) he can do passionate, even enraged roles (like in Malcom X and Glory) and he can do roles with a little of everything, like his latest project, The Hurricane.  Washington plays Ruben "Hurricane" Cater, a professional boxer wrongfully accused of murder and imprisioned for most of his life because of bigotry in the state of New Jersey.  In this movie he plays many different types of characters, all in the same man... from the energetic young fighter, to the bitter and slightly insane inmate to the compassionate and learned grown man who eventually gets justice.
