Violence and a Freaky Plot Are Going to Make You $1 Million Every Time.
The producers of Fight Club did what Quentin Tarantino did in 1994 with Pulp Fiction. A really interesting and weird plot coupled with lots and lots of violence to make you (especially if you are a male ages 18-24) want to go see it again. Simiar to Pulp Fiction, to really understand Fight Club you really have to see it at least twice to catch some stuff that you might have missed. And although the acting by Brad Pitt and Edward Norton is not spectacular, they do a very good job playing the extraordinary characters they play. When I first heard about Fight Club I thought it sounded quite dumb, but it has a very cool plot that makes you want to keep watching.
Eward Norton as the battered Jack
Jack (Edward Norton, Rounders, American History X) is pretty boring guy who is stuck in a pretty boring job doing pretty much nothing except flying around the country. The only excitement he has gotten in years is going to group therapy meetings (don't ask me why this is excitement) to help cure his insomnia (don't ask me how). But his life starts to pick up when he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt, Meet Joe Black, Se7en, Twelve Monkeys), a soap salesman who lives in a delapidated house in the middle of a deserted neighborhood. They go out for a drink and afterwards get into a fight. For some reason they seem to think the fighting is fun so they keep doing it, picking up other guys who want to join in too. So Jack and Tyler start up "Fight Club" and come up with the rules you have heard so much about like "Rule #1, Do not talk about Fight Club" and "Rule #2, DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!" Jack's life starts to pick up, although he does have quite a few more bruises and stiches. Even Tyler starts to see a new girl named Marla (Helena Bohnam Carter, Mighty Aphrodite). Everything is going great, until Tyler starts building an underground army with all of the members of Fight Club and doing random acts of vandelism and destruction. In fact his "army" acts more like a cult, with complete devotion to Tyler and whatever he says... repeating certain phrases like chants. Jack figures this has gone too far and tries to stop him, especially when he learns that Tyler is trying to destroy several buildings which could end up killing hundreds of people. Now all of this may sound interesting, but it is nothing compared to the big suprise you get towards the end of the movie concerning Jack and Tyler. I am not going to tell you what it is, but it is a pretty damn cool suprise that you really can't see coming unless someone told you... and since I am not a person who likes to be a spoiler, you will have to see for yourself what the suprise is.
Brad Pitt as the psychotic Tyler Durden
What really makes Fight Club cool is its suprise factor. It is possible to figure out what the suprise is because there are a few clues, but they disguise them very well until you get to understand what is going on. And as much as I hate to say it, Brad Pitt did a good job... he even bulked up so he didn't look like such a girlie man (which is more then I can say about Edward Norton). Norton's performance wasn't quite as good because he used his usual monotone voice and average Joe manuerisms. There is one other thing that I should mention. There is quite a bit of violence in Fight Club with a lot of blood. Mostly it is during the actual fighting scenes where people are wailing into each other and noses are being broken and peoples' heads are being pounded into the floor. So if you don't like violence, or feel a little squeemish around blood I wouldn't go see this movie... or you are planning on brining children to Fight Club, don't. But Fight Club isn't just a movie for 18-24 year old males who are looking for a testerone outlet (although it does that too), it has a cool plot that makes you want to go back and see it again (I will probably go back just to catch the stuff I missed).
