Monday, March 23 was definitley an exciting night from the viewers at home (me) to the cast and crew of Titanic eagerly watching at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. I'll talk you through the exciting night and offer you my opinions on the winners... and well, loosers. Once you read through, you have the opportunity to take the poll: "If you could change any of the awards, and given one to Titanic, what would it be for?" As I stated before, Titanic was the big winner. You all know that Titanic won for Best Picture and Best Director... all adding up to a total of 11 awards, tied for the most ever. That is very awesome, considering that Titanic was nominated for 14 (also
tied for the most ever!). Many people, including me, feel that Titanic deserved them all, but I suppose Titanic had to give others a chance. I'll talk about that more later as you read through the winners... the envelope, please?!
Titanic didn't start the night off too well. The first Oscar was handed out to Best Supporting Actress, and Kim Basinger won. (L.A. Confidential.) I was so incredibly dissapointed, and annoyed, that Gloria Stuart didn't win. She did a wonderful job on portraying the character of the old Rose. Some people say that Kim won because she had a larger part. But for a supporting actress, Gloria made the most out of her part, I thought. Oh well, everyone knew it was going to be a tight race between Gloria and Kim. They both deserved one.
Titanic's next big dissapointment came when Kate Winslet didn't recieve the Oscar for Best Actress. This was another huge dissapointment for me. Everyone said Helent Hunt would win (and they were right) but I couldn't help but hope Kate would win. Again, I felt that she really deserved it. To act in one of the greatest films of all times and not get an Oscar for it is kind of hard. Kate did a marvelous job of playing Rose, and Titanic wouldn't have turned out the same without her. I feel like no one could have done a better job than she did, but of course how would we know. There have bee many mixed feelings about how Kate felt all over the internet, but a few people said this and I agree that she was aware that Helen Hunt (As Good as It Gets) would probably win, and seemed to be a good sport the moment they announced the winner.
Titanic's third and final loss was when it didn't win for Best Makeup. Again, I was somewhat dissapointed because the makeup artists worked very hard to make the actors and extras look as though they had just arrived in a time machine from 1912. They also did a superb job on making the frozen bodies in the icy water just after the ship went down look horrid and realistic. I am understanding on this though, Men in Black had some awesome makeup jobs on the aliens.
The elegant gowns and amazing outfits made with exquisite detail won Best Costume Design.
Titanic truly deserved these awards for all the detail, time and patience put
into scenes that made us feel as though we were actually on the great ship. Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, Film Editing, and Art Direction.
James Horner definitley deserved these two awards for his wonderful music that certainly set the tone for the entire movie. Most people agree that Titanic would not have been the same without his music. He won Best Original Dramatic Score. He and Celine Dion both deserved the Best Original Song, My Heart Will Go On. Celine sang it beautifully before they announced the winner. (She wore the replica made of the Heart of the Ocean from the movie. It looked astounding on her.)
Please take the poll: if you could change any award around and give it to Titanic what would it be? Why? (Examples you may use: Best Supporting Actress to Gloria Stuart, Best Actress to Kate Winslet, a nom to Leo for Best Actor, etc.) All you have to do is e-mail me. I'll display the results once I get enough in a few days.
