Benjy's mother, Belle May Steinberg Carroca, has convinced Benjy to invite Alan to dinner at her apartment in Brooklyn. To Benjy's surprise, Alan graciously accepts. "It'll be nice to have a meal that doesn't end with someone bringing me the check. I'll get my passport, and then we're off to Brooklyn!"
Alan: "Benjamin, why didn't you tell me your mother was so ravishing?"
Belle: "Oh, Mr. Swann."
Alan: "Alan. And what shall I call you?"
Belle: "How about 'yours'?"
In Belle's apartment, the whole family gathers to welcome Alan Swann to Brooklyn, including Uncle Morty and Aunt Sadie, who live one floor down. Aunt Sadie wears her wedding dress. "You like it? I only wore it once!"
Then everyone in the neighborhood stops by to meet the movie star. Another big production number: Welcome to Brooklyn/we've got a star/shining/in Brooklyn/in Apartment 5A!
"May I offer you something from the wine cellar?" asks Belle. Alan begins "I'm dying for a very dry...", sees Benjy's look, and finishes "soda water."
