Norris Springs Into Action Again In 'Walker' spinoff

Soon-to-be new bridegroom Chuck Norris is fast becoming to Dallas what Gerard Depardieu was for so long to La Belle France - a one-man movie business.

Not only does the popular action star's company produce CBS-TV's Walker, Texas Ranger, he periodically makes movies of the week and, as of next month, gets involved in a second TV series in the city.

Sons of Thunder, a Walker spinoff, rumbles into production on Dec. 9. CBS has ordered six episodes of the summer replacement series that will shoot through March 3.

Mr. Norris will appear in three episodes of the show about Walker protege Carlos Sandoval (Marco Sanchez) and boyhood buddy Trent Malloy (Jimmy Wlcek) who open a private detective firm in Dallas.

But unlike Cordell Walker, Carlos and Trent aren't Texas legends. "Walker is mythic," says writer-supervising producer Bob Gookin. "He doesn't make a mistake. These guys are younger and more vulnerable. They get themselves into - and out of - jams."

According to producer Garry Brown, the new series will utilize more of the city than Walker, which often shoots on the outskirts of Dallas-Fort Worth.

"We're going to take the show into the heart of Dallas, he says. "These guys are going to live and work downtown. The restaurant-bar owned by former private eye Alan Autry (Bubba in TV's In the Heat of the Night) where they hang out is in the West End."

Chuck, Aaron Norris and Gordon Dawson will executive-produce Sons of Thunder. Bill Norton, Walker Regular Michael Preece, Chris Nyby II and Rich Thorne will direct. Fernando Arguelles (Walker, Texas Ranger) will direct photography on the first episode. After that, DP Joao Fernandes, a veteran of nine Norris features, will handle three. The esteemed, Wylie based Don Reddy (Last of the Mohicans) will handle two.
